In 2011, as a new (to Manhattan) nanny, I had the opportunity to connect with many agencies in my quest toward finding the perfect position. A few agencies stuck out at me with one commonality between them: trust and understanding. One woman in particular has stayed with me throughout these years: the great Carol Solomon, founder of the New York Nanny Center whom has since retired, had a warm, welcoming presence that was instantly comforting. Her pairing skills were top notch-- every interview I went on was a perfect fit, as she really took the time to listen to what I needed and desired in a position. It was evident that her clients valued her expertise, and relied on her judgement as well.
Out of all the agencies I had experienced, it became clear to me that Brooklyn as a whole was underserved by the giants of the industry. Many families here in my neighborhood desperately needed exceptional care, but had very little guidance beyond babysitting websites with thousands of sitters' profiles (I'm sure you've been there). They would complain that it was impossible to sort through and discern whom was qualified, let alone safe and competent. Friends of the families' I worked with began to ask me if I knew of anyone who cared for children "just like" me. You could call this my lightbulb moment.
How was it possible that family after family where I lived felt so disconnected from the many great agencies that I had used? Was it the formality of the process? Could it have been the location? Were too few placement specialists understanding their unique needs of balancing a career with hands-on childrearing? After four years of dissecting the benefits and frustrations of existing agencies with the families nearby, I am proud to announce a new type of household staffing agency.
What makes us different than all the others? First, we have years of intimate experience with families who know what it is like to balance a stressful career with the overwhelming desire to simply be the best parent possible. We get that desire to work your tail off all day, and commune with your children at night-- talking, cuddling, and reconnecting as a family at home. For this reason, we work around you. That's right. No agency-standard 9a-5p office hours to contend with. No longer the circus of, "I can't catch a taxi in this rain, and the subway has broken down AGAIN." We meet like kith. We meet like friends. We come to your home, office, or favorite cafe and meet face to face, over a scone and a cozy drink, to talk about your family's unique needs. (You can even come to our house and join us for tea at our table or in the garden. That's what friends do.) And if you're just too busy to take a break, we get that too. Skype and Facetime are our lifesavers; they're not just reserved for the grandparents. Ok, maybe even that is a bit too much at this point, and perhaps you're still in your PJs at noon. No judgement here. A good ol' telephone appointment works just as well.
Kith and Kin Household Staffing Agency is set to launch in late June 2016. We hope you feel the warmth and love that we've felt over the years, interacting with some of the very best families in this city. Chat with us for just a small amount of time, and you'll see just how easy finding that extra helping hand for your family can be.
